They’re finally here.
And I’m extremely confident that these Private Pilot Flashcards can make your aviation studying dramatically easier. Like… 10× easier.
After 15 months of pouring everything I had into this project, they’re officially available for purchase right now. You can learn more at airplaneacademy.com/flashcards, and I’ll share more details below.
But first, I want to explain why I made these, what problem they solve, and what actually went into building them. Because if you’ve ever felt overwhelmed, stressed, or rusty as a pilot — I think this will resonate with you.
Memorizing Aviation Is Hard. Full Stop.
I’ve been a pilot since 2007. I’ve taken a lot of checkrides. I’ve done plenty of flight reviews.
And I can tell you from firsthand experience: memorizing aviation knowledge is hard.
Every single checkride and flight review I’ve ever taken has come with stress. And if you’re reading this right now, there’s a good chance you’ve felt that same stress — or you’re feeling it right now.
There’s just so much to keep in your head:
- Regulations
- Systems
- Weather
- Airspace
- Performance
- Aerodynamics
It never really stops.
I’ve done it all — in-person ground school, textbooks, online courses. And while those are great for learning the information, here’s the problem I kept running into over the last 18 years:
They’re not great at helping you stay sharp.
It’s not realistic to keep re-taking courses or re-reading entire textbooks just to brush up on the areas where you’re rusty. So what happens?
We get rusty.
You’ve gotten rusty… I’ve gotten rusty… we’ve all gotten rusty. With no simple way to fix that.
“Aviation Is a New Language”
One of my favorite instructors ever told me something during a flight review that really stuck with me:
“Aviation is a new language — you just have to become fluent in it.”
Then he pulled out a small set of flashcards covering airport signage.
And I remember thinking, Dang… I need something like that.
That moment planted a seed.
Because flashcards solve a very specific problem that aviation studying desperately needs solved.
Why Flashcards Work (When They’re Done Right)
The magic of flashcards isn’t that they magically make information easier.
It’s this:
They let you separate what you know from what you don’t.
That means:
- The pile of things you need to study gets smaller
- Your studying becomes focused instead of overwhelming
- You move from stressed → methodical
- From scattered → organized
That alone is a massive morale boost.
I’ve used other aviation flashcards before. They were okay but not awesome. So I always thought:
If I ever made my own… I’d want them designed exactly how I would actually use them.
And eventually, I couldn’t shake that idea.
The Question That Started It All
I kept coming back to one question:
What would it look like if I went all-out and tried as hard as I possibly could to make the best aviation flashcards imaginable?
Not “good enough.”
Not “quick to market.”
But a set I could:
- Use for decades
- Rely on to stay fluent
- Trust to be accurate and thoughtfully designed
I’ll be honest — I put this project off for a long time because I knew how hard it would be.
Turns out… it was even harder than I expected.
It took 15 months.
But I can say this with total confidence:
The final product is awesome.
Not in a braggy way — in a relieved, proud, and deeply satisfied way.
Because I know exactly how much work went into them. And I know exactly what problem they solve.
What Actually Went Into Making These
I want you to understand why these are different. So here’s the behind-the-scenes look.
Step 1: What Even Goes on the Cards?
I started by reading:
- All 400+ pages of the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge
- The applicable sections of the FARs
- The Aeronautical Information Manual
I took detailed notes on everything I felt actually mattered.
That process alone resulted in 100+ pages of notes.
Step 2: A Full Rebrand (Yes, Really)
When I started designing early versions of the cards, I hit a wall.
They weren’t premium enough.
They didn’t feel like something I’d want to use for years.
So I made a big decision:
I completely rebranded Airplane Academy.
That meant weeks of work updating:
- The website
- The visual identity
- The flashcard box
- The cards themselves
- Even the illustrations and imagery
Everything is cohesive — and it was a ton of work — but it was 100% worth it.
Step 3: Turning Notes Into 350 Cards
This was one of the hardest parts.
Taking 100+ pages of notes and boiling them down into 350 individual cards that were:
- Accurate
- Thorough
- Concise
…was incredibly challenging.
Every single card had to thread that needle.
Some cards went through six revisions.
Which brings me to…
Step 4: The CFI Panel (and a Lot of Humility)
I brought in an incredible group of CFIs — engineers, test pilots, and instructors I deeply respect.
I sent them all 350 cards thinking it would take a few weeks to clean things up.
I was wrong.
It took over six months of back-and-forth to refine every single card.
We ended up with 1,400+ pages of Google Docs debating wording, accuracy, and clarity.
It was the hardest part of the project — and also the best.
That’s why the launch kept getting delayed.
I refused to cut corners.
Thank you for your patience.
The Physical Details (That Actually Matter)
I tested:
- Multiple paper thicknesses
- Different finishes
- Different box designs
The final cards are:
- Thick cardstock
- Glossy front (looks great)
- Matte back (so you can write and highlight)
They feel substantial.
The custom box fits the cards perfectly — not jammed in, not sloppy — just easy and satisfying to use.
Most people will never notice these details consciously.
But you feel them when you use the cards.
Seeing Them Printed for the First Time
After more than a year of work, I finally got to film the first production run.
And honestly… I got a little sentimental.
Watching the cards come off the printer, knowing each one had a story behind it, was surreal.
They’re printed, cut with precision, organized by color-coded sections, shrink-wrapped, tabbed, boxed, and shipped.
Seeing it all come together was incredibly rewarding.

Why I’m So Excited About These
It might sound silly to be this excited about flashcards.
But this has been a pain point for me for two decades.
And now I finally have a solution.
These flashcards help me:
- Stay sharp
- Stay fluent
- Study efficiently
- Reduce stress
And while they’re labeled “Private Pilot,” the truth is:
Private knowledge is foundational to every rating.
Instrument.
Commercial.
Flight reviews.
This stuff never stops mattering.
Like my instructor said:
Aviation is a new language — you have to stay fluent.
These flashcards are how I do that now.

More than anything, I hope these help you on your aviation journey.
I hope to encourage you that becoming a pilot (and even owning your own airplane one day) is totally doable.
These flashcards are just one tool to help you get there.
They’re finally here.
And I’ve been waiting a long time to say that.
